Carbapenem

Carbapenems are part of a class antibiotics called beta-lactam antibiotics. Carbapenems have a broad spectrum of activity and are often used to treat severe infections, including multidrug-resistant, serious infections cause by bacteria. Unlike other beta-lactam drugs, which are commonly taken by mouth, Carbapenems are given by injection.

Carbapenems antibiotic are cytolytic and work by attaching to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and preventing bacteria from forming a cell wall. Preventing cell wall synthesis kills the bacteria. Carbapenems can be used for various Gram-Positive and Gram-Negative aerobic (aerobes) and anaerobic bacteria (anaerobes).

Commonly used Carbapenems include – Meropenem, Ertapenem, Imipenem, Doripenem, Panipenem, Tebipenem, etc. Generic Carbapenem-base antibiotics are affordable and used widely in developing countries.
Indications: Bacterial Meningitis, Acute Pelvic Infections, Respiratory Tract Infections, Intra-Abdominal, Urinary Tract Infections and others.

Market: the global Carbapenem-based antibiotics market growth is driven by the rising prevalence of gram-negative bacterial infections, the increasing production of generic drug, the significant growth in hospital-acquired bacterial infections and the rise in incidence of antimicrobial resistances.

The Carbapenem-based antibiotics market size is expected to grow from US$3.96 billion in 2021 to US$5.34 billion by 2028; it is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 4.4% during 2021-2028.
